Most home office advice assumes a room with a door. A great many home offices are a desk in the corner of a bedroom, or a dining table that converts twice a day.

The problem with those is not storage. It is that work stays visible, which is why the room never feels off duty.

The rule is that paper on a desk is either active, to file, or to shred. Three trays, or three folders, nothing else. No general in-tray, because a general in-tray is just a pile with a container around it.

Empty the file and shred trays monthly. If they need emptying weekly you are keeping too much.
